NO FERTILIZER YET!

EMERALD VIEW TURF FARM IS HARVESTING OUR EVT FESCUE AND BLUEGRASS TODAY! Give us a call today to place your order. If you have zoysia, the only thing you need to apply at this time is crabgrass pre-emergant WITHOUT fertilizer. You will begin fertilizing your zoysia with an organic fertilizer on May 1st. Remember, the rate at which zoysia comes out of dormancy in the spring is dependent entirely on the soil temperature. The warmer the soil temperature, the greener the zoysia. Remember, you cannot “green up” zoysia with fertilizer in the spring. Give us a call at our office with any questions and come out to pick up your organic fertilizer.

Crabgrass Pre-emergent Application Timing

WE ARE HARVESTING OUR FESCUE AND BLUEGRASS TODAY! The soil temperature at the farm today is 38 to 39 degrees. The best defense against crabgrass and all weeds is a dense and healthy stand of grass. If your stand of grass is a little weak and open then there is a possiblility of crabgrass and weed encroachment. We need to remind ourselves that crabgrass doesn’t germinate until the soil temperature is 50 to 55 degrees. Knowing your soil temperature is the key to the timing of your crabgrass pre-emergent application in the spring. Soil temperatures vary depending on location. The closer you are to an urban area (St. Louis City), the higher the soil temperature. This is because of the heat generated from buildings, roads, parking lots, lights etc. Check your soil temperature in the area of your lawn that gets the most sun and also near your driveway and sidewalks. This is where soil temperature will be highest. You can purchase a soil temperature gauge at our office. This gauge will save you at least one application of fertilizer and/or chemical every year. A soil temperature gauge is one of the best investments towards having a healthy and beautiful lawn!

CONTINUING TO HARVEST

We have seen the first dose of winter temperatures over the last 5 days in the St. Louis area. The reoccuring question we are asked this time of year is “Can you still install sod right now?”. The answer is “YES”. This is great root building weather. We will continue to harvest fescue and bluegrass until the soil freezes. The combination of two factors promote frozen soil, consistent temperatures below freezing and moisture. On record, this combination usually doesn’t happen until after the new year. Give us a call at our office to order your sod today.
